New Hampshire’s First in the Nation status gives our citizens a truly unique opportunity to meet presidential candidates as they repeatedly cross our state to gain a coveted lead with Granite State voters. The New Hampshire Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence has seized this opportunity to have the ear of possible future presidents and have them speak about how they as President would address the issues of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking.
The discussions with the candidates have included advocates, law enforcement, local government officials and educators, as well as survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking. These events are giving New Hampshire’s advocacy community a chance to substantively engage the candidates on these critical issues.
Like many states, New Hampshire’s domestic and sexual violence victims lack a critical safety net in terms of resources. Victims are coming to shelters with more complex issues, including the increasing rates of substance abuse and heroin addiction among victims suffering from trauma. Additionally, New Hampshire has no specific funding for shelters or services for the increasing numbers of human trafficking victims in our state, and domestic and sexual violence crisis centers are filling that need to help victims find refuge and begin healing. These roundtable talks are an opportunity to share these concerns with candidates and ask how they would prioritize funding for victims' services if they were to become the next President.
The Coalition has had the opportunity to discuss Human Trafficking with Governor John Kasich and Domestic Violence with Jeb Bush and Senator Lindsey Graham. We have reached out to all the campaigns and offered to host events and provide information about the particular challenges survivors and the advocacy community face in New Hampshire. We hope to continue these discussions with more of the candidates to bring these critical issues forward, ensure that the voices of victims are heard, and affirm that together as a nation we can say NO MORE to domestic violence and sexual assault.
These discussions are for educational purposes and do not constitute endorsements of any candidates.
